1. About PolySmart Group

PolySmart Group is a research-oriented student group dedicated to cultivating outstanding undergraduates in research.
The group is led by Prof. Qing Li, Prof. Xiaoyong Wei, Prof. Chen Jason Zhang, and Dr. Changmeng Zheng, focusing on guiding undergraduates step by step from classroom learning, to research practice, to top-tier academic achievements.

2. Who We Are Recruiting

• Undergraduate students graduating in 2027 or 2028

• Motivated to learn, research, and explore cutting-edge AI

• Students with background knowledge in AI / ML are also welcome to join directly

3. Recommended Path

We provide a structured pathway for students:

1. COMP4423 - Computer Vision (More details)

   • Build solid foundations in CV and AI

   • Learn essential concepts for research

2. Join PolySmart Group

   • If you have taken COMP4423, you are strongly recommended to join

   • Students with prior AI / ML knowledge may also directly enter the group

3. Within PolySmart Group, You Will Gain:

   • Top Conference&Journal Publications (CCF-A, SCI-Q1)

   • AI Practice Opportunities (hands-on coding, experiments, system design)

   • Practical Project Creation (AI Coffee Robot, Digital Humans, etc.)

   • Project alignment where your Student Assistant (SA) tasks can be directly aligned with your URIS project or Final Year Project (FYP), making your work more impactful and efficient

   • Strong Recommendation Letters from leading professors

4. Future Pathways After PolySmart

   • PhD Study (with full scholarships)

4. Current Research & Projects

Our student assistants are currently working on:

• Domain-Specific Large Language Models (LLMs)

• AI Agents

• AI for Science

• AI for Database

• Brain-Inspired Neuroscience

• AI Coffee Robot System

• Digital and Virtual Humans

• Sign Language Recognition and Translation

As a student assistant, you will work on projects that integrate Computer Vision, NLP, Robotics, AIoT, and more.

5. Requirements

• Undergraduate students (Year 2-3), expected graduation: 2027-2028

• Experience in Python / PyTorch or other programming languages / frameworks

• Experience with front-end (JavaScript, HTML, CSS) or back-end (Node.js, Django, Flask) is a plus

6. Achievements of PolySmart Students

Our pathway is verified and validated by real student outcomes.

Students who have gone through the PolySmart pathway have already achieved remarkable success:

• The first cohort of 3 student assistants enrolled in 2023

  • 2 students awarded the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

  • 1 student awarded the PolyU Research Postgraduate Scholarship (PRPgS)

On average, each student published 2 papers in top-tier venues during their undergraduate journey.

7. Work Hard & Play Hard

At PolySmart, we believe that research is not only about hard work and challenges, but also about enjoying the journey.
You will be prepared to take on challenges in research, and at the same time, be prepared to have fun with the group.

Our activities include:

• Weekly Group Lunch - connect with peers and mentors in a relaxed setting

• Weekly Basketball Games - stay active and bond with teammates

• Random Hiking Trips - explore nature and refresh your mind

We consider all students as true collaborators, not just assistants. You will work side by side with mentors through:

• Group meetings for brainstorming, sharing progress, and solving challenges together

• One-on-one discussions to receive tailored guidance for your projects

• Hands-on support our professors and senior researchers often stay late with students, helping with coding, debugging, and paper writing
